ABOUT

Small animal research facility is designed with the concept of clean and dirty corridor. Space inside the facility is divided into two areas mainly i.e. for rooms (50-60% of the total constructed area) and for services such as stores, washing, office and corridors.

  • Laboratory animals are housed in IVCs (Individually Ventilated Cage system) and animal environmental parameters are monitored regularly.
  • Specific rooms are assigned for different activities such as quarantine room, experimentation room, necropsy room, animal surgery room.
  • Only authorised personnel are allowed to enter the animal facility and their entry exit records are maintained.
  • The animal facility is under CCTV surveillance.
  • IAEC (Institutional Animal Ethics Committee) meeting happens at least twice a year in which all the research protocols are discussed thoroughly and then approved.
  • Animal experiments are performed with utmost care to avoid unnecessary pain to the animals and all the procedures to be followed inside the facility are mentioned in the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and are performed as per the guidelines of CPCSEA.

ACCREDITATION

Small animal research facility IIT Mandi is accredited by ‘The Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA)’ with registration id: 2137/GO/ReBi/S/21/CPCSEA

Institution Animal ethics committee(IAEC) is functioning effectively so that a quality and consistent ethical review mechanism for research on animals is put in place for all proposals dealt by the Committee as prescribed by the CPCSEA.

FACILITIES

Individually Ventilated Cage system :

Small animal research facility IIT Mandi has Individually Ventilated Cage system (IVCs) installed for housing of animals. Both IVCs are attached to AHU (Air handling units) to control the flow of air inside the cages. AHU contains HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) filters which capture pollen, dirt, dust, moisture, bacteria (0.2-2.2µm), virus (0.02-0.5µm) and submicron liquid aerosol.

Cage changing station :

Cage changing stations containing HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) filters with dual air flow system are installed in animal facility rooms to facilitate the procedure of cage change and to avoid contamination of the room environment.

Quarantine facility

Quarantine room is available for the separation of newly received animals from those already in the facility until the health and possibly the microbial status of the newly received animals have been determined. Quarantine room is well quipped with IVCs and cage change station

Animal surgery room/ Procedure room

For experimental procedures a separate animal surgery room is available which contains a euthanasia chamber connected to a CO2 cylinder and flow meter. A biosafety cabinet is also installed in the room.

Other facilities

Air shower, Double door Autoclave , RO water system, Dehumidifiers, Deep freezer, Washing station , Biosafety cabinets, Digital Thermo hygrometer , Digital Lux meter, Digital Sound level meter, Animal ventilator .
